The national qualification system for funeral directors implemented in Korea in 2012 poses a problem on expertise due to the short-term non-exam completion system and lack of refresher education. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate the vocational education of German funeral instructors, based on the traditional craftsmanship system, and to derive implications for Korea to enhance professionalism. Mainly based on literature studies and statistical analysis, a survey of the current status and actual condition of vocational education among German funeral directors has been performed. German funeral directors are subdivided into funeral specialists, funeral directors, funeral director meisters, and embalmers, as well accident- specialized funeral directors, crematorium technicians, crematorium assistant technicians, and memorial park customer counselors. Professional training, maintenance training, and additional training are provided under the dual vocational education system. In Germany, a three-year vocational curriculum, along with intermediate and final exams, is conducted on theoretical (written and oral) and practical skills to cultivate professional skills. In addition, the Association of Funeral Instructors is contributing to the development of services in this industry and is enhancing the quality of workers by performing roles such as education and test management, public relations, and cooperation. In Korea, it is difficult to improve professionalism with a single funeral director’s job with no difference in job competency and poor maintenance training. Thus, through the establishment of a corresponding vocational education system, proficiency, professionalism, and social reputation and recognition must follow.
