Respekt und Konsens im Politikdiskurs des europäischen Mittelalters. Was die moderne Demokratie schaffte und abschaffte
본 연구는 중세 정치사상의 동의(Konsenz)개념을 분석한다. 동의는 이제까지 배타적으 로 서양 정치사상사에서 근대 민주주의에만 존재하는 고유한 개념으로 오해되어 왔다. 그러나 동의 개념은 전근대 중세 정치사상에서도 중요한 지위를 차지하였다. 따라서 동의 개념의 존재를 근대 민주주의의 결정적 요소로 보는 것은 지나친 단순화의 오류를 범하게 된다. 반대로 전근대 정치사상의 전통 내에 존재하는 동의관념을 근거로 나름의 민주주의 전통이나 맹아가 존재하였음을 입증하려는 논의 역시 전근대 중세정치사상에서 이해하는 동의관념을 피상적으로 이해한 결과이다. 중세의 동의 관념은 오늘날 민주주의라 고 여겨지는 절차에 대한 생각을 결여하고 있었을 뿐 아니라 참여 성원내에 존재하는 위계에 대한 의식에 의해 규정되고 있었다. 본 연구는 이 두 개념을 화두로 전근대, 중세 정치사상의 특질을 규명하는 동시에 현대 민주주의의 출발과 그 발전의 고유성을 이해하는 교두보를 놓고자 한다.
Respect and Consent in the Medieval Political Discourse. What the Modern Democrac created and removed.
This study discusses the medieval concept of consent. The concept of consent has been ascribed to modern democracy exclusively, but it played an important role in the medieval political deliberations. It is thus oversimplification to regard the concept of consent as a phenomenon and product exclusively of the modern democratic theories. It is equally problematic to reason from the medieval concept of consent that there was a democracy or its sprout in the Middle Ages. The medieval concept of consent lacked in deliberation on a democratic decision-making process. Furthermore, it presupposed the concept of hierarchy among the members of the society. The medieval political discourse was framed by the concept of hierarchy, which presupposed inequality among the members of the society in terms of the rights and privileges. he following study endeavors to illuminate the specific characteristics of the medieval concept of consent and help explain the genesis and development of contemporary democracy both as an institution and as an idea.
